2010 Lincoln Cent Design Blog/Vote

3/31/2010 UPDATE: In spite of receiving 100% of the votes coming in for this ATC poll, my unofficial shield design did not win. Hard to believe. However, I consider it a partial victory in that another shield design was chosen over the previous flag front runner, so we do get to have "shield pennies" for the next 50 years after all! I love it. Just got my first shield penny in change this past Sunday after finding a 1911 wheatie the day before. The only downside is of course that these new pennies are made of garbage metal and therefore dissolve in the earth almost instantly. They will not be any fun to dig up 100 years from now, but fresh out of the mint, they look great. More than a century of Lincoln cents continues...

Hi folks. Ringmaster here. Let's have some fun, and vote for our favorite 2010 designs. Maybe we'll give out a prize or something for one or two voters... who knows… It will be interesting to know what treasure hunters think about the official new 2010 designs (LP-01 through LP-18 are shown at the very bottom of this page), as well as the one I put together (LP-TJS).

As you probably already know, the four new 2009 Lincoln cent reverses are designed (see above) and the first one, at least, is already out in circulation. Starting in 2010, a new reverse will take over for the "memorial" penny, and if memory serves, I think it will last for at least 50 years based on coin design laws.
I have some thoughts about the proposed 2010 Lincoln cent designs, though these thoughts are probably much too late. I believe after reading some online articles, that the treasury is already leaning heavily toward LP-10 (the flag), which is OK, but I liked some of the other designs better, and I came up with my own (LP-TJS), based on the best attributes of LP-12, LP-14, LP-16, and the stars from LP-04. I am partial to lady liberty, eagles, and other traditional, ornate, classic designs (like shields), and the idea of having a "shield penny" for the next 50 years is one that I like. I don't think anyone wants another "wheatie", so I'm really glad that LP-18 got axed because of similarities in design to an old German coin.
Buildings are not bad in and of themselves, but they all tend to look the same on such small scale objects, so I'm bored with them if nothing else goes along with them in the coin's design. The same goes for severed heads of old dudes. Our most attractive coins were NOT the ones depicting side shots of floating heads of old men, great as their deeds may have been, but rather the ones with beautifully detailed composition like the standing liberty quarter and the walking liberty half.

The picture above shows a 1943 steel penny, the 1909-1958 "wheatie" reverse, and the 1959-2008 "memorial" reverse.

Look at the 19 designs below and vote for the one you like best. Vote by sending us an email (tlaufer@hotmail.com), and we'll tally the results and post them eventually here on the ATC website. Maybe we'll use a pie graph. That would be informative and statisticy. If you pick my composite design, please also email the CFA, the CCAC (addresses provided below), and US Secretary of the Treasury Tim Geithner at the US treasury or US Mint (if you can find the email address) with your thoughts. Be sure to attach a picture (jpg) of my design and/or a link to the ATC website so they know what you are talking about. I know it's probably too late to get another design submitted or considered, but maybe if we sent enough emails, we could get someone to listen. Then the four artists I stole from in my composite could share the reward (if there is one) when the LP-TJS shield design goes on the back of the new penny… Yeah, well, I've had dumber ideas than this before, so shut it.
